When people ask “how do you get that close?”, this is the answer. The Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro shoots at true 1:1 life size, and because it’s a long lens, we can do that from about 10 inches away. That leaves room for hands, tools and light.
Why it earned a spot on our shelf
Shorter macro lenses have to get right up against the skin to reach life size, which blocks your light and gets in the way. The 180mm gives us working distance, and that’s everything for extraction footage. It’s also an L-series lens, so it’s built to last.
How we use it on set
- Mount it on an EF-to-EOS M adapter for our Canon M50.
- Use manual focus and move the camera, not the focus ring, for fine adjustments.
- Stop down to around f/8 to f/11 for more depth of field.
- Light from both sides of the lens, and watch focus on a big monitor.
Coach’s tip
At 1:1, depth of field is razor thin. A focusing rail or a steady rig matters as much as the lens itself.
