Look closely at almost anyone’s nose and you’ll see a grid of little grey dots. Most people call them blackheads. A lot of the time, they’re actually sebaceous filaments, and knowing the difference saves you from over-working your skin.

Sebaceous filaments

These are a normal part of skin. They’re small, fairly even in size, greyish or skin-toned, and they sit flat. If you squeeze them, a pale, thread-like strand comes out, and they refill within weeks. That’s expected. You can’t remove them permanently, and you shouldn’t try.

Blackheads

Blackheads are plugged pores where the top of the plug has darkened. They’re usually darker, more defined and less uniform than filaments. They’re the ones that release as a firm, satisfying plug.

How to tell them apart

A 10X view makes this far easier. That’s why a Pore Tube 10X LED Mirror is on our short list.

What to do with each

For filaments, keep it gentle: oil cleansing with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and a leave-on BHA like Paula’s Choice 2% BHA help keep them looking less obvious. Save the loop for real blackheads, and don’t chase every dot.
